Life & Love & Lessons Learned

The Secret

I’ve always been a big fan of The Secret. You know, the book by Rhonda Byrne. The Secret is all about the power of positivity. Ask. Believe. Receive. Ask for what you want. Believe you’ll get it — like really believe — and then Receive it. Simple, right? Don’t you wish life really worked like that? I’ve got news for you…  It does!

I first heard about The Secret back in my Mary Kay Cosmetics days, during a training event. I had no idea what the woman was talking about. I remember writing “The Secret” down in my notes, and then never following up. I had too much to learn as it was. My brain was completely full. But looking back, I wish I had followed up. The Secret has had a powerful impact on my life.

I remember reading one of the examples…something about looking through a catalog and picking out your favorite things. You order them. They show up in the mail. Why? Because you knew they would. You believed they would. You ordered them.

This is the same premise. You order your thoughts. You dictate your life based on your thoughts. Think negative? Negative happens. Think positive…BAM! Positive happens.

I started trying this one day with my favorite flower, the sunflower. I put that thought in my head, and said, “Today, I’m going to see my favorite flower!” In my head, I knew it was a sunflower. I had no plans to visit a florist or drive by any sunflower fields. But I wanted to test The Secret. I asked. Sunflowers. I believed. And you know what? Throughout the day I saw 5 sunflowers in 5 different locations. I saw a sunflower pin on the cashier at my local supermarket. I saw a sunflower wreath on the front door of a house, on a side street that I’d turned down by mistake, while trying to find a new restaurant. And by the end of the day, I’d seen the sunflowers that I told myself I was going to see. Brilliant!

I started doing it with other things…

My car. I always wanted to own a Mercedes. Like, always. So, it was kind of in my head anyway.  But one day in April of 2015, I stopped at a red light with my husband and kids. To the left, there was a white Mercedes for sale at a local car dealership. The very next day I stopped by to see it, and take it for a test drive, but the owner of the dealership explained that someone had already claimed it earlier that morning. “Did they put a down payment on it yet?” I asked. Indeed, they hadn’t. He told me the customer had planned on coming back at noon. It was after noon, so I figured it was fair game. I asked how much I would need. Two hours later, I showed up with a check & signed the papers to my little white dream car.

The power of positivity is not easy, I can assure you. It’s hard sometimes when you’re broke, when the bills are due, and you don’t have the money…it’s hard when you can’t realistically see a way out of a bad situation. But I’m telling you – this stuff works!

You must tip the scales just 1 little percent. 51% positive. That’s it. You decide to run your life the way you want it to be, and it will be. Your brain doesn’t know the difference between truth and lies. It believes what you tell it. What are you telling yourself every day?

Just this morning, I wrote about a dilemma I was facing: to stay or leave my current storefront. I laid out what I wanted. I wanted a new location. I wanted parking for my customers. I wanted a bigger space. A nice changing room and ladies room. A place my customers could be proud of.

I’ve had it in my head all morning. Two hours after writing that piece, I got an email from a realtor. There was a space available. It was bigger. It had parking. It was new. It had plenty of rooms for the customers to try on clothes. It had 2 bathrooms. It had central air. It was 5 minutes from where I’m located now.

I couldn’t believe my luck. But wait…it wasn’t luck at all. I had formulated what I wanted in my head. I had pictured it. And it came to me.

The Secret works. It’s crazy amazing.

So many of us go through lives just existing. We aren’t living! We are waiting for a boss to give us a raise. Waiting for someone to cut us a break. Waiting for someone to write our fate. Waiting…

The reality is, we have the power to change our own lives. We write our own fate.

What is it you want? What is the story you want to tell?

Tell it. Do it. Be it.

You got this.
